Various styles were explored when Black Egg redesigned Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox. The client chose the heroic Disney-esque version, but with modifications. The body was "beefed up", the ponytail dropped and a beard added. Also the trees were made taller so as not to make Paul quite so large. The client also desired a happy carefree mood, so a clear blue sky was added in the final piece. The slightly heroic pose projects a decidedly self-assured feeling.

 Although the characters were drawn on paper, the coloring was done in Photoshop. Some of the clouds and foreground trees were composited from photographs for a more dramatic effect. The grass, background trees and some cloud elements were added in Painter.
