All LDs listed
below are NTSC and in CLV except where noted. Since
the release of DVD into the marketplace, many retailers are liquidating
their stock to make room for the smaller DVDs. Thus if you get
lucky you can find some very good deals on Hong Kong Laserdiscs.
LDs don't have the feature of letting the user turn on or off
subtitles, so they're either on the disc or not their at all,
just like video tape. LDs can contain a stereo analog audio track
and a stereo digital audio track, so some discs take advantage
of this feature by giving the viewer the option of choosing different
audio tracks. So below when it states "English and Cantonese
or Mandarin" that means you have the choice of listening
to the track which features some English and Cantonese OR you
can listen to the all-dubbed Mandarin track) Only LDs recorded
in CAV mode give the viewer true interactivity, where
they HAVE to press either "step" (to view individual
screens) or "play" (to view video at full speed). Great
for viewing supplimental material which some LDs offer,
but is more common on DVDs. MODES: CAV (Constant Angular Volocilty) gives the viewer 30 minutes of video playback per side. CLV (Constant Linear Volocity) gives you 60 minutes per side. Most newer LD machines offer auto-reverse so a movie can be viewed with only about an 8 second pause while the disc switches directions and the laser skips to the other side. LDs are NOT recordable. Film print subs indicates that the subtitles are the original white subtitles burned into the film print and are sometimes difficult to read when on a white background. Some Chan LDs have enhanced easy-to-read subs with thin black borders. Chapters indicates that the disc is chapter encoded so you can go directly to major scenes as with DVD. Some more popular HK LDs were sold as double disc sets even though the film would've fit easily onto a single disc. This was practised in HK in the early 90's as an excuse to charge more for each title. This was one factor that helped to create a rampant bootleg market that is currently causing the Hong Kong video and film industry much distress. Jackie Chan himself has been very outspoken about his opposition to video piracy and other illegal activities commonly associated with the Hong Kong entertainment industry. This is all the more reason for a databse such as this to exist, to offer the public a detailed list of legitimate titles available on Laserdisc. |
