The air was hot and reaked of
sweat and steel.
Rei
awoke in a pile of discarded machinery, her rusted joints groaned
as she fought to stand.
Where...where am I? Rei thought. She
stretched her wings and made sure she was in one piece. Her memory
was a blur, remembering only her name and her home.
Safe,
warm,
and happy.
Not at all the gloomy place she was in now.
Rei
stepped out of the mirky alley and strained her mechanical eyes
to absorb the sight before her. People bustled about like insects while strange
flying machines zipped by overhead.
What is this place? Rei wondered.
Rei
walked up to a passing child and mother.
"Excuse me...can you tell
me which way is home?" Rei asked. The
child suddenly stepped back and started crying.
"MONSTER!!" screeched
the child's mother. The mother grabbed its child and ran away screaming
for help. Rei
was confused by what had happened when a large spotlight suddenly
blinded her.
AA voice boomed over a loud speaker...
"DO NOT MOVE!! NON-HUMANS ARE NOT permitted TO EXIST! STAND AND PREPARE FOR JUSTICE!!"
